Confirmation is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic church that initiates the baptized into full discipleship with Christ. This Sacrament of Initiation is carried out through anointing and laying on of hands and prayer for the purpose of bestowing the gifts of the Holy Spirit to the confirmands.
Last Friday, February 17, 46 Senior High School (SHS) learners of Ateneo de Davao University, attended the orientation for Confirmation. The SHS-Theology teachers spearheaded the discussion in finding meaning of this Sacrament of Initiation to Christian life.
Mr. Alfredo Elnar introduced the seven sacraments of the church namely- Sacrament of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist), Sacraments of Healing (Penance and Anointing of the Sick), and Sacraments of Commitment (Holy Orders and Matrimony). He explained that these sacred rituals are significant in receiving God’s grace.
It was also indicated by Ms. Lilian Adlawan that at the age of reason, the one who received baptism must affirm his/her Faith through confirmation. She added that confirmation strengthens the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ.
Mr. Elnar also discussed that during the Confirmation Rite, the laying on of hands symbolizes the conferring of gifts of the Holy Spirit to the candidates. Meanwhile, the sealing of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is represented through the Holy Oil.
SHS-Campus Ministry Coordinator Ralph Benzon Caligner stated that this sacrament plays a vital role in our Faith in fulfilling the roles and responsibilities of a fully-pledged member of the Church.
“This is the best time for them to express and commit to what God’s Love and Compassion truly means for them, by being a full member of the whole Catholic Church,” Caligner said. He also added that the Office of the Campus Ministry fully support this program in connection with its moral and social responsibility especially here in Mindanao.
Mr. Luna Tan Fayloga, chair of the Theology Department of the College, heads this Confirmation with the college students who have not received the sacrament. The concluding rites will be held at the Our Lady of the Assumption Chapel, Ateneo de Davao University on Monday, February 27, 2017.
